Meeting Report: 2011 March 26

Posted in Meeting Reports at 12:18 am by mark

It was the usual gang today, except for Fred who had to work. We shifted gears a bit, and wrapped up Martian Successor Nadesico with episode 26, then watched the two Queen Emeraldas OVAs that have been released in the US. Folks had stuff to do, so we kept it short and sweet.

At first, it looked like it might be just Rob and myself today, but then Kris and Rei showed up, and Fred came back, so it was most of the usual suspects. We watched Martian Successor Nadesico #25 (only one more to go!), D.Gray-man #68, Pandora Hearts #9, Durarara!! #6, and Baccano! #7.

Kind of a lean meeting today, as it was just me and Fred and Rob.

We watched Martian Successor Nadesico #24, Baccano! #6, and Pandora Hearts #8, as scheduled, but we weren’t really feeling the D. Gray-man and I didn’t have episode #6 of Durarara!, so instead we watched episode #1 of Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge and, just to be different, episode #1 of the 1980 Doctor Who story “Meglos.”

Meeting Reports: 2009 Dec 5 and 2009 Dec 19

Posted in Meeting Reports at 10:34 pm by mark

On December 5, we watched the regularly-scheduled episodes of Nadesico #5, the double-length Naruto #127-#128, D.Gray-man #53, Bleach #98, and Gokusen #4.

On December 19, we started with Nadesico #6, but since I couldn’t find the disc with Naruto #129 on it, we watched episode 2 of The Daughter of Twenty Faces instead, then continued with D.Gray-man #54, Bleach #99, and Gokusen #5.

The following meeting would have been on Jan 2, but the library was closed, and it was booked for Jan 16, so we’re meeting Jan 17 instead at the usual time.

Meeting Report: 2009 Nov 21

A typical Saturday meeting this time around, with the usual die-hard attendees. Fred brought in one of his consoles, using his laptop for the monitor; fortunately I didn’t see him playing “Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker”…

Episodes were the regularly-scheduled Nadesico #4, Naruto #126, D.Gray-man #52 (with a new opening sequence! Kind of looked like a new animation style to me as well), Bleach #97, and Gokusen #3.

Back to our usual Saturday meeting time today, and we had quite a few folks show up! Leftover Halloween candy was shared by all.

We got a late start today because I managed to leave my laptop at home, but after I dashed home to fetch it we watched Nadesico #3, Naruto #125, D.Gray-man #51, Bleach #96, and Gokusen #2.

Meeting Report: 2009 Oct 25

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:28 pm by mark

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a meeting report, and it would be difficult and useless to try to fill in all the gaps since earlier this year. Suffice to say that the club is alive and well, if small — we just had our anniversary meeting two weeks ago, on October 11 (coincidentally, my older son’s birthday).

At that meeting, we watched the last episode of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and at today’s, we watched the last episode of Dennou Coil. We’re replacing those two series with Martian Successor Nadesico (on DVDs generously loaned to us by Fred) and Gokusen, respectively; we watched the first episode of each one at the anniversary meeting.

Today we watched Nadesico #2, Naruto #123, D.Gray-man #50, Bleach #95, and Dennou Coil #26 (as mentioned before, the conclusion).

Stay tuned to the e-mail list to hear about the next meeting!

Meeting reports for Feb. 28, Mar. 15 and 28th, 2009

Posted in Meeting Reports at 12:53 pm by Kris

Hi all!!! On Feb. 28, we watched our usual shows, including Naruto #112,Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann # 18, D. Gray-man #42, Bleach #86, and Dennou Coil #16. Mark will have to fill in any additional info for this meeting in a subsequent note since I was unavoidably absent for that meeting.

The next meeting after that was shifted to March 15 due to a scheduling issue with the Library; however, we gained the benefit of one of the larger rooms to spread out in. We watched the scheduled episodes, which included Naruto #113, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann # 19, D. Gray-man #43, Bleach #87, and Dennou Coil #17 , and enjoyed clementines, “cookies n’ cream” chocolate bars, and Mike and Ike candies; making anyone hungry yet? ;)

We decided to try something new and unprecedented for the Mar. 28 meeting; since Mark was unable to attend, we decided to substitute for our regular episodes…with video games! In the first of what will likely be many “Gaming Day”-s to come, several of our members brought in video games and systems both old and new, and soon our small room was filled with the sounds of button-mashing and electronic music. From anime-and-Japanese-themed games to puzzling adventures, we had it all and we all had a wonderful time!! Thanks to all who brought games and systems, food, and helped us carry everything in and out, and a thank you to the Library for the extra equipment they let us use and for their patience while we tried to transfer everything!!! Next time we’ll be back to our regular episodes…

Meeting Report: 2009 Jan 3, 2009 Jan 17, 2009 Jan 31

Posted in Meeting Reports at 1:29 pm by mark

Quick catchup.  Note that we are meeting today, February 15, at the usual time, due to a schedule conflict with the library.

On January 3, we watched the scheduled episodes of Naruto #107, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #14, D.Gray-man #38, Bleach #81, and Dennou Coil #12.

On the 17th, the episodes were Naruto #108, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #15 (a climactic, dramatic episode!), D.Gray-man #39, Bleach #82, and Dennou Coil #13 (a bit of a tear-jerker).

On the 31st, we had an oddly-scheduled meeting, again due to a conflict with the library, and we barely managed to squeeze in Naruto #109, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #16 (a recap episode), D.Gray-man #40, Bleach #83, and Dennou Coil #14.  In fact, there were recaps in a lot of today’s episodes — strange coincidence.

Today, we’re going to have to squeeze again, since there are two double episodes!  The scheduled shows are Naruto #110-111, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #17, D.Gray-man #41, Bleach #84-85, and Dennou Coil #15.

Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu! Which is to say, Happy New Year!

We’re meeting today, January 3, so let’s catch up with the last few meetings…

On Nov 22, as scheduled, we watched Naruto #104, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #11, D.Gray-man #35,Bleach #78, and Dennou Coil #9.

The December meetings were uneventful as well, with the scheduled episodes shown each time. On the 6th, those were Naruto #105, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #12, D.Gray-man #36,Bleach #79, and Dennou Coil #10. And, in turn, the week before Christmas we watched Naruto #106, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #13, D.Gray-man #37,Bleach #80, and Dennou Coil #11.

So, today we’ll watch Naruto #107, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #14, D.Gray-man #38,Bleach #81, and Dennou Coil #12. Hope to see you there!

Posted in Meeting Reports at 12:45 pm by mark

Here we go again, with a 4-meeting catchup report.  (We’re also meeting today, Nov 22.) Where does the time go??

On Sep 27, the scheduled episodes were Naruto #100, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #7, D.Gray-man #31,Bleach #72, and Dennou Coil #5.

October 11 was our anniversary meeting — and, coincidentally, my older son’s birthday, so he brought several friends. Along with the pizza kindly provided by Kris, and a couple of new attendees, that made this the liveliest meeting in a while! I brought a number of DVDs besides the standard episodes, but we decided to show the scheduled episodes of Naruto #101, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #8, D.Gray-man#32, Bleach #73-74 (a double-length special), and Dennou Coil #6.

Unfortunately, on the 25th we were back down to a small crowd, watching the scheduled episodes of were Naruto #102, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #9, D.Gray-man #33,Bleach #75-76 (another double episode), and Dennou Coil #7.

That brings us to this month, when, on the 8th, we watched Naruto #103, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #10, D.Gray-man #34,Bleach #77, and Dennou Coil #8.

And all that is by way of helping me figure out that today’s episodes will be Naruto #104, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #11, D.Gray-man #35,Bleach #78, and Dennou Coil #9!

Meeting Report: 2008 Jul 19, 2008 Aug 2, 2008 Aug 16

Posted in Meeting Reports at 1:41 am by mark

Gotta catch up again — it’s been a while since we’ve met, and even longer since we’ve had a meeting report!

On July 19, the scheduled episodes were Naruto #97, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #4, D.Gray-man #28, Bleach #68-69 (a double ep), and Dennou Coil #3; however, since almost everyone had missed the previous meeting, by popular demand, we showed Dennou Coil#2 again instead.

For August 2, that made the scheduled episodes Naruto #98, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #5, D.Gray-man #29, Bleach #70, and Dennou Coil #3.

I was out of town on August 16, so I provided a tape with Naruto #99, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #6, D.Gray-man #30, Bleach #71, and Dennou Coil #4. Hope it played all right!

We had no meeting August 30, because the library was closed for Labor Day; and we had no meeting on September 13 because pretty much the whole club was attending Nan Desu Kan!

Meeting Report: 2008 July 5

Posted in Meeting Reports at 5:25 pm by mark

Definitely what you’d call a lean and mean meeting today — it was just me and Kris. Nevertheless, we watched the scheduled episodes of Naruto #95-96 (a double episode, following an epic battle among Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru to its conclusion), Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #3 (in which Simon and Kamina encounter a new enemy, and discover a new ability), Chi’s Sweet Home #3, D.Gray-man #27 (revealing much of Allen’s history with General Cross), Bleach #67 (taking the puzzle battle to our heroes’ school, where they win another round — but have another friend to rescue), and Dennou Coil #2 (wherein Yuko, nicknamed Yasako, gets to know Fumie, and they enlist the aid of Yasako’s grandmother to cure Densuke the cyberdog).

Hope to see you in two weeks!

Meeting Reports: 2008 June 7 and June 21

Posted in Meeting Reports at 7:37 pm by mark

Once again, apologies for the delay — here’s a double report to cover the last two meetings, which saw the introduction of our two new series.

June 7 we took in Naruto #93 (in which Orochimaru and Kabuto engage in combat with Tsunade and Shizune, who are then joined by Jiraiya and Naruto), Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #1 (wherein we meet Simon, a driller, and his older friend Kamina, who discover a strange artifact, then defend their subterranean village against an invader from the surface), D.Gray-man #25 (following Allen on a mission to contact General Yeegar), Bleach #65 (in which our friends are sent on a wild goose chase, and are shown to have three antagonists named Cloud, Nova, and Rin Rin, who kidnap Chad), and Ghost Hunt #25 (the final episode, revealing Ayako’s true strength, and showing the final purification of the haunted shrine). I also tossed in episode 1 of Chi’s Sweet Home, one of the cute little three-minute series that come out from time to time, this one following a kitten who gets separated from his mother.

On June 21, we watched the scheduled episodes of Naruto #94 (following the escalating battle), Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann #2 (in which Simon and Kamina find themselves on the surface with their new friend Yoko, and some more fighting to do), Chi’s Sweet Home #2, D.Gray-man #26 (wherein General Yeegar takes on the Millennium Earl, and gets the bad end of the bargain), Bleach #66 (concerning another puzzle-chase through an empty museum, resulting in Chad and Orihime’s return), and Dennou Coil #1 (introducing Okonogi Yuko, her younger sister Kyoko, and their cyberdog Densuke, in a not-too-distant future of ubiquitous wearable computing).

Meeting report: May 31, 2008

Posted in Meeting Reports at 3:04 pm by Kris

Due to an unexpected wedding celebration, Mark’s appearance was a short one this time around; as always, though, he was kind enough to make a tape of this week’s scheduled episodes (Thanks!!). After some fiddling around with the TV cables, we finally had a watchable picture and continued without further ado.
The eps this time around were: Naruto #92 (in which Tsunade considers Orochimaru’s offer, Naruto trains, and Jiraiya investigates…no, I mean really, he does investigate), Pumpkin Scissors #24 (which concludes the series in a somewhat satisfactory manner), D. Gray-man #24 (in which Krory and the group return to Order Headquarters, where the usual insanity ensues), Bleach #64 (in which Ichigo and company attempt to return to their usual [and I do mean the term loosely] routines, but Hollows and unexpected visitors from Soul Society manage to interrupt), and Ghost Hunt #24 (in which all hell essentially breaks loose).
Thanks to all who attended (and thanks to Rei for the Oreos :) !
Our next meeting is this Saturday, June 7, offset slightly due to scheduling issues, where we’ll be premiering Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann! Stay tuned to the mailing list for more!

Meeting Reports: 2008 Mar 29, Apr 12, May 10

Posted in Meeting Reports at 2:07 pm by mark

Sorry for the lack of reports, folks; life’s been particularly hectic lately. Let’s catch up.

March 29 was a pretty typical meeting; we watched the scheduled episodes of Naruto #89 (in which Tsunade confronts Orochimaru), Pumpkin Scissors #21 (wherein events at the ball begin to get out of control), D.Gray-man #21 (revealing something startling about the “villagers” killed by the vampire), Bleach #61 (in which the Shinigami confront Aizen, who makes a dramatic departure), and Ghost Hunt #21 (in which Mai’s nightmare is shown to have a relationship to reality).

April 12’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #90 (in which Tsunade confronts Orochimaru), Pumpkin Scissors #22 (in which the lieutenant fights a duel), D.Gray-man #22 (revealing the history of Eliade and Krory), Bleach #62 (explaining Aizen’s interest in Rukia), and Ghost Hunt #22 (featuring another of Mai’s revelatory dreams).

At this meeting, we also decided that the next two series, replacing the soon-to-end Pumpkin Scissors and Ghost Hunt, will be Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Dennou Coil.

The April 26 meeting was canceled due to a schedule conflict with the library.

Finally, on May 10, we watched our scheduled episodes: Naruto #91 (in which Shizune reveals Tsunade’s history to Naruto), Pumpkin Scissors #23 (revealing the conclusion of the duel… but not of the events at the ball), D.Gray-man #23 (wherein Krory defeats Eliade and decides to join the Exorcists), the double-length special Bleach #63 (the first half of which is a recap episode, the second half of which shows our friends’ return from Soul Society), and Ghost Hunt #23 (in which Naru lies in a coma while the rest of the team continues the investigation). Kris was unable to attend… but Fred actually showed up!

Be advised that the next meeting will be delayed to Saturday, May 31! Stay tuned to the e-mail list for details.

Meeting Report: 2008 Mar 1 and 2008 Mar 15

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:43 am by mark

Been busy again, so here’s a double report to catch up on the last two meetings. On the 1st, we watched the scheduled episodes of Naruto #87 (in which Naruto advances to the next stage of his training, while Jiraiya “gathers information”), Pumpkin Scissors #19 (following the Lieutenant to a formal ball while the squad distributes food), D.Gray-man #19 (wherein Allen and Lavi investigate reports of a vampire preying on a village), Bleach #59 (concluding the fight between Ichigo and Kuchiki Byakuya), and Ghost Hunt #19 (in which another investigator disappears, and Mai has a terrifying nightmare).

Today, Kris was able to make it to the meeting, and she brought green-frosted cupcakes! The scheduled episodes were Naruto #88 (in which Naruto again trains hard, while Jiraiya and Orochimaru both close in on Tsunade’s location), Pumpkin Scissors #20 (revealing more about Marquis Paul’s embezzlement and the events at the formal ball), D.Gray-man #20 (featuring the reluctant vampire Krory [Crowley?]), Bleach #60 (revealing the true fates of Captain Aizen and the Council of Forty-Six), and Ghost Hunt #20 (in which we learn more about “Urado” and the likely source of the house’s hauntings).

Meeting Report: 2008 Feb 16

Posted in Meeting Reports at 5:00 pm by mark

A small meeting on the 16th; only four folks showed up to watch the scheduled episodes of Naruto #86 (in which Naruto receives a gift from Gai and training from Jiraiya), Pumpkin Scissors #18 (wherein Stekkin attempts to cheer up the squad), D.Gray-man #18 (featuring a jealous brother and a hapless Akuma), Bleach #58 (revealing Ichigo’s bankai, Tensa Zangetsu), and Ghost Hunt #18 (in which the SPR crew, and a number of other investigators, begin investigating a very strange house).

Meeting Report: 2008 Jan 19 and 2008 Feb 2

Posted in Meeting Reports at 9:34 pm by mark

Nothing out of the ordinary to report for our last couple of meetings, though we did have one new face last Saturday.

On the 19th, we watched the scheduled episodes of Naruto #84 (flashing back to the final hours of the Uchiha clan), Pumpkin Scissors #16 (revealing what the Lieutenant has been carrying in that big case), D.Gray-man #16 (in which Allen and Lenalee depart to help Kanda), Bleach #56 (featuring a fight between Yoruichi and Sui Fong), and Ghost Hunt #16 (wherein Mai tries her hand at some spiritual defense).

Then, on the 2nd, the scheduled episodes were Naruto #85 (wherein Sasuke takes on Itachi), Pumpkin Scissors #17 (concluding the Mione affair), D.Gray-man #17 (wrapping up the story of Vittorio), Bleach #57 (revealing the history between Yoruichi and Sui Fong, and beginning the battle between Ichigo and Kuchiki Byakuya), and Ghost Hunt #17 (in which Naru takes a big risk).
