Report on 2006 Jan 22 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:01 pm by mark

For a while I was afraid nobody was going to show up, but then Rob arrived. Michelle was with us for a few shows, and then Jason showed up for about the last ten minutes of the meeting — so, um, small turnout today. I suppose it could have been due to the Broncos game.

Anyway, we watched the regularly-scheduled episodes of Naruto #46, Full Metal Alchemist #30, Panda-Z #29, Hikaru no Go #55, Damekko Doubutsu #8, Bleach #19, and Galaxy Angel III #37-38.

Since so few people were there, I took notes on the episodes, which follow:

Report on 2005 Dec 4 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 12:29 pm by mark

This may be the longest delay yet in a meeting report — it’s been a busy month and a half for me!

About a dozen people attended the December 4 meeting, in addition to myself. We watched the regularly-scheduled episodes of Naruto #45, Full Metal Alchemist #29, Panda-Z #28, Hikaru no Go #54, Damekko Doubutsu #7, Bleach #18, and Galaxy Angel III #35-36.

We had our annual holiday break for the next two regularly-scheduled meetings, and a bit of a communications breakdown for January 8 — Kris scheduled a meeting but was unable to attend, and I was in Alaska on a business trip! We’ll be meeting today, January 22, though. See you there!

Meeting Report: 2005 Nov 20

Today we had a pretty standard meeting. My projector decided to behave today, so we watched the regularly scheduled episodes of Naruto #44, Full Metal Alchemist #28, Panda-Z #27, Hikaru no Go #53, Damekko Doubutsu #6, Bleach #17, and Galaxy Angel III #33-34. A total of ten people showed up.

Things were a bit dicey today, as my data projector refused to talk to my laptop (despite seeming to operate correctly otherwise). So I zipped home and came back with an SVHS cable so I could display on the library’s monitor. Due to the late start, we only watched Naruto #43, Full Metal Alchemist #27, Hikaru no Go #52, and Bleach #16. About ten folks were in attendance today, including a couple of new faces!

Meeting report: 2005 Oct 23

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:21 pm by mark

Today is our closest meeting to Halloween this year, so Kris asked if I could provide some appropriate material. So I showed the anime music video entitled “The AMV Before Halloween”, which won a prize at last month’s Nan Desu Kan, followed by the original four-part OVA of Vampire Princess Miyu, a spooky classic. I wrapped up with a different sort of animated classic: It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! We had about 8 folks in attendance today, and Kris provided some trick-or-treat style candy in addition to some animal crackers. (I got a rock.)

Meeting report: 2005 Oct 9

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:05 pm by mark

The October 9 meeting was pretty typical; around 10 people showed up. We watched our regularly-scheduled episodes: Naruto #42, Full Metal Alchemist #26 (halfway done!), Panda-Z #26, Hikaru no Go #51, Damekko Doubutsu #5, Bleach #15, and Galaxy Angel III #31-32. Also, in keeping with my “Share the Weirdness” policy, I showed a little music video called Funky Cat Maybe.

The September 25 meeting was back to business as usual, with about 8 people in attendance. We watched our regularly-scheduled episodes: Naruto #41, Full Metal Alchemist #25, Panda-Z #25, Hikaru no Go #50, Damekko Doubutsu #4, Bleach #14, and Galaxy Angel III #29-30.

Report catch-up: 2005 Aug 6 and 2005 Sep 10

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:46 am by mark

I’m behind the times here — I never reported on the August 6 meeting, where we watched the regularly-scheduled episodes of: Naruto #40, Full Metal Alchemist #24, Panda-Z #24, Hikaru no Go #49, Damekko Doubutsu #3, Bleach #13, and Galaxy Angel III #27-28.

September 10 we had our third anniversary meeting, with a record attendance of 19 people! (Folks show up when you offer them free pizza — who knew?) Amongst much conversation, we watched the first four episodes of Fushigi Yuugi, provided by Kris.

Today (September 25) is our first Sunday meeting for the school year; stay tuned for a report!

Meeting Report for Aug. 20

Posted in Meeting Reports at 10:08 pm by Kris

Our Saturday, Aug. 20, meeting took a different format this time around. Mark was unable to attend due to prior commitments, so we set up the TV/VCR/DVD player and went through the inevitable “what to watch” debate. Fred was kind enough to go and get his ENTIRE Dvd collection for us to choose from (Thanks, Fred!!!); while waiting, we talked, drew, and witnessed a rather interesting scene-by-scene discussion of Jessie’s manga collection ;)
Once the suitcase of DVDs arrived, we ended up choosing volume one of the Ranma 1/2 OAVs; most entertaining, as always!!! Afterwards, more discussion and devouring of animal crackers!
Thanks to all who attended!
Our next meeting will be our third anniversary meeting, so get ready for fun!!! More details coming soon!!!

Report on July 9 and July 23 meetings

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:00 pm by mark

I’m getting a bit behind on meeting reports again, so I’ll be brief. July 9 we had a medium-sized meeting, with 8 or 9 attendees; July 23 was pretty slim, with only 4 folks other than myself. (Kris was feeling ill.) At both meetings, we watched the regularly-scheduled shows, with the addition of a new short, “Damekko Doubutsu”, which I would translate as “Useless Animals”. (And I repeat, if you think it’s weird, you should see the ones I don’t show you!)

July 9: Naruto #38, Full Metal Alchemist #22, Panda-Z #22, Hikaru no Go #47, Damekko Doubutsu #1, Bleach #11, and Galaxy Angel III #23-24.

July 23: Naruto #39, Full Metal Alchemist #23, Panda-Z #23, Hikaru no Go #48, Damekko Doubutsu #2, Bleach #12, and Galaxy Angel III #25-26.

Meeting Report for June 25, 2005

Posted in Meeting Reports at 10:12 pm by Kris

Saturday’s meeting was a “Choose-your-Own-Adventure”-type event; several members brought stacks of DVDs to choose from this time around, so we opted to sample some other licensed shows and save the regularly scheduled episodes that Mark taped for us for our next meeting. With choices ranging from the action-packed to the dramatic to the just plain bizarre, we decided to start out with the first 2 (dubbed) episodes of FLCL, thanks to Angela. No further comment necessary, or possible, for that matter.

After that, we chose to switch gears a bit and ended up with the first four eps. of Final Fantasy Unlimited(also dubbed), courtesy of Fred, one of our newer members who was kind enough to bring his extensive collection for us. Very interesting stuff (but can’t comment further without revealing my almost total ignorance of the Final Fantasy games, etc) ::now hiding under table from rabid FF fans::

We went a little bit over our scheduled session, but everyone had a blast, and several members hung out afterward to trade manga and talk. Thanks to all who attended, to Jessie, Fred and Angela for sharing their DVDs with us, and to Mark for making the tape for us as well. Next time we should be back to our regular eps of Naruto, FMA, Hikaru no Go, Bleach, and Galaxy Angel, and we hope to see you all there!!!

Report on June 11 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 7:53 pm by mark

June 11 was our first Saturday meeting for the summer. It was well attended, with 15 or so people, including a few new faces.

Since last meeting was an off-the-cuff affair, this time we watched the regularly-scheduled episodes, namely Naruto #37, Full Metal Alchemist #21, Panda-Z #21, Hikaru no Go #46, Dogtato-kun #6 (which wrapped up the plot from #5), Bleach #10, and Galaxy Angel III #21-22.

The next meeting is scheduled for June 25. Once again I will be unable to attend (as I will be in New Mexico testing for a black belt in Tae Kwon Do), but as usual, I will get a tape to Kris.

Meeting report for May 15, 2005

Posted in Meeting Reports at 9:50 pm by Kris

Our meeting schedule has been a bit erratic recently due to various events and conflicts, so thank you all for bearing with us here. The meeting that was supposed to take place May 1st was pre-empted by the Library’s annual book sale that took over our meeting space; that weekend was also the weekend of Starfest, the big sci-fi convention in Denver. Mark and several of our other members were able to attend the con and a good time was had by all.
Thus, our next meeting took place on May 15th. Mark had a NDK organizational meeting to attend and kindly provided a tape of the regular eps. I also brought a few shows from my personal collection to choose from if a little variety was desired, including the first volumes of Last Exile, DNAngel, and Peacemaker Kurogane. Jessie, one of our new members, brought her collection of yaoi and shonen-ai shows, including FAKE and Gravitation, as well, so we had a number of interesting options…
After some debate among the lively crew (close to 15 people this time around), Peacemaker Kurogane was duly nominated and we popped in the DVD. After finishing the first four episodes, we still had some time left for one more show, so we popped in Mark’s tape to watch the latest ep. of Galaxy Angel, whereupon the VCR’s picture promptly died, which was exceedingly odd since we had tested it at the beginning of the meeting and it had worked perfectly well. Sound but no picture is interesting but not particularly helpful, so we extricated the tape successfully and voted again. This time the consensus was for Gravitation ::insert chorus of fangirlish squeaks of delight here:: We were able to finish the first episode before the meeting ended; many members lingered afterward to talk. A different sort of meeting but satisfying nonetheless.
After the meeting, I went and paid a visit to Stonebridge Games, just a couple blocks from the library. A very nice little shop with plenty of stuff to interest the gamers among us, and the anime fans as well. The shop’s owner, as it turns out, is very interested in bringing in more anime and manga related items, and also in renting out anime DVDs. We’re also making arrangements for a club discount at the shop! More info coming soon!
Due to the Memorial Day weekend, the library will be closed, which means no meeting over that weekend. Subsequent meetings over the summer will be on Saturdays, not Sundays, since the Library is closed on Sundays as well through the warmer months. We are also planning another one of our little lunch/dinner things over the next couple of weeks; stay tuned for details!!!

Report on April 17 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 5:49 pm by mark

Good meeting today; we had 16 people, which was a bit tight in the conference room. Saw some new faces. As scheduled, we watched Naruto #36, Full Metal Alchemist #20, Panda-Z #2o, Hikaru no Go #45, Dogtato-kun #5 (which even had a plot!), Bleach #9, and Galaxy Angel III #19-20.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 1, which coincides with StarFest, which I help run. So I won’t be in attendance, but I’ll arrange to get Kris a tape ahead of time; the club can then decide whether to watch the tape, or do something completely different.

Report on April 3 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 6:29 pm by mark

April 3 was a typical meeting, with a good dozen or so in attendance. Since some club members were traveling, I suggested showing something other than our regular episodes; the suggestion was soundly rejected. :) We watched Naruto #35, Full Metal Alchemist #19, Panda-Z #19, Hikaru no Go #44, Bleach #8, and Galaxy Angel III #17-18; I also tossed in Dogtato-kun #4 for variety.

Report on March 6 and March 20 meetings

Posted in Meeting Reports at 10:29 am by mark

As I mentioned, I was ill on March 6, so I dropped off a tape with Naruto #33, Full Metal Alchemist #17, Panda-Z #17, Hikaru no Go #42, Bleach #6, and Galaxy Angel III #13-14.

March 20 I was able to attend, with a projector, so we had a good viewing. I offered to show the Miyazaki film Porco Rosso, but the club opted for the regular episodes of Naruto #34, Full Metal Alchemist #18, Panda-Z #18, Hikaru no Go #43, Bleach #7, and Galaxy Angel III #15-16, which about killed us with laughter.

Report on February 20 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 9:46 am by mark

At the February 20 meeting, we again had over a dozen people in attendance! As scheduled, we showed Naruto #32, Full Metal Alchemist #16, Panda-Z #16, Hikaru no Go #41, Bleach #5, and Galaxy Angel III #11-12. We also watched Magical Chocolate, a cute Valentine-themed short.

The next meeting is today, March 6 — however, I’m ill, so I’ll be dropping off a tape with the scheduled episodes.

Report on January 23 and February 6 meetings

Posted in Meeting Announcements, Meeting Reports at 9:45 pm by mark

I’m getting behind in the meeting reports, so I’m going to skip the episode summaries this time. If I get a lot of free time, I’ll go back and fill them in… but don’t hold your breath.

At the January 23 meeting, as scheduled, we showed Naruto #30, Full Metal Alchemist #14, Panda-Z #14, Hikaru no Go #39, Sweet Valerian #6, Bleach #3, and Galaxy Angel III #7-8.

At the February 6 meeting, we had over a dozen people in attendance! As scheduled, we showed Naruto #31, Full Metal Alchemist #15, Panda-Z #15, Hikaru no Go #40, Bleach #4, and Galaxy Angel III #9-10.

Next meeting will be a week from today, Sunday February 20. See you there!

Report on January 9 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 9:37 pm by mark

Relatively quiet meeting today; about 8 folks showed up. As scheduled, we showed Naruto#29, Full Metal Alchemist #13, Hikaru no Go #38, Bleach #2, and Galaxy Angel III #5-6, plus the shorts Panda-Z #13 and Sweet Valerian #5.

Episode summaries follow.

Report on December 19 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 12:44 pm by mark

Had about ten folks show up this time! The results of the new series voting were clear: Bleach is the new series. (Samurai Champloo was second.) So, today’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #28, Full Metal Alchemist #12, Hikaru no Go #37, Bleach #1, and Galaxy Angel III #3-4. I tossed in Panda-Z #12 and Sweet Valerian #4.

The next meeting would have been the day after New Year’s, so we’re postponing it until the following weekend: January 9.

Episode summaries follow.
