Report on May 11 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 9:41 pm by mark

As scheduled, Hellsing #8, RahXephon #7, Hikaru no Go #4, Haibane Renmei #7, and Galaxy Angel #7 were shown. Attendance was light, but enthusiastic. Kris brought cookies!

After the meeting, Kris suggested somehow previewing other series, to help decide what to show after Hellsing and Haibane Renmei finish their runs (unless the membership prefers to fill that time with Japanese lessons). I’m going to look into the possibility of extracting the opening credits from some shows, since they tend to give at least some idea of what the series is like.

The next meeting may be on June 1 instead of May 25, due to the Memorial Day holiday. Additionally, meetings may shift to Saturday in the summer, if the library ends up being closed on Sundays. Kris will research both of these possibilities.

Whenever the next meeting is, episodes will be Hellsing #9, RahXephon #8, Hikaru no Go #5, Haibane Renmei #8, and Galaxy Angel #8.

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:54 pm by Kris

Our meeting for April 27, 2003 went very well; Mark provided us with a tape of our scheduled episodes, which included Hellsing #7, RahXephon #6, Hikaru no Go #3, Haibane Renmei #6, and Galaxy Angel #6. No trouble with the TV, started on time, so we had a few minutes afterward to socialize and introduce a couple of new members, Jesse and Liz. Thanks to all who attended!

Next meeting will be scheduled for May 11, 2003, from 1:30-3:30pm; scheduled episodes will be Hellsing #8, RahXephon #7, Hikaru no Go #4, Haibane Renmei #7, and Galaxy Angel #7. Hope to see you there!

Meeting on April 27

Posted in Meeting Announcements at 3:02 am by mark

Kris had debated postponing the April 27 meeting by one week, since StarFest is this weekend. However, she has opted to keep the meeting on schedule, so there will be a meeting on Sunday, April 27, at the library, from 1:30-3:30 PM, as usual.

I will not be present but Kris has a tape with all the episodes. See you in two weeks!

Capsule reviews

I just finished watching the third and final disc of Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku (Now and Then, Here and There). It took a long time, even though there are only 13 episodes, because it’s so unrelentingly intense that I often had to pause for a while between episodes, or even within an episode. Harsh, harsh series, but very good. Don’t watch it if you have a low tolerance for pain.

In other anime news, I’ve sort of been watching a smorgasbord lately. Caught the first episode of Nurse Witch Komugi-chan, which was fluffy and entertaining. The last two episodes of Earth Defense Force Mao-chan came out, and I watched them with my little boy; a cute ending to a cute show. And in the cute vein, I watched the first few episodes of Full Moon wo Sagashite; it’s well-executed, but for some reason the main character’s voice doesn’t click with me, and since the focus is on her singing career, that might be an obstacle. I’ll give it a few more episodes to see if it’ll grow on me.

I’ve snagged the last two eps of Stratos 4 but haven’t gotten to them yet. Like Kiddy Grade, this one started out looking like total fluff and then snuck in an intriguing plot. (I enjoyed Kiddy Grade more, though, partly due to the character designs.) The first episode of D.N.Angel was sufficiently entertaining to make me check it out further, and Scrapped Princess is off to an excellent start. Definitely looking forward to more.

Finally, Naruto and Hikaru no Go are still cranking along with fine episodes. On deck: Narue no Sekai, E’s Otherwise, Last Exile, Ningen Kosaten, Mermaid Melody, and Texhnolyze.

So much anime, so little time!

Report on April 13 meeting

As scheduled, Hellsing #6, RahXephon #5, Hikaru no Go #2, Haibane Renmei #5, and Galaxy Angel #5 were shown. The library either fixed their monitor, or they have more than one and we got the undamaged one this time.

We started relatively promptly, and everything ran straight through on time, with occasional brief pauses as I elaborated on or corrected the fansub translations.

After the meeting, Kris and I discussed the possibility of my presenting either my pre-prepared talks on Japanese, or an ongoing series of short lessons, beginning at the end of Hellsing. Feel free to share your thoughts on this either here or on the mailing list.

Next meeting will be Sunday, April 27, from 1:30-3:30 PM. Scheduled episodes will be Hellsing #7, RahXephon #6, Hikaru no Go #3, Haibane Renmei #6, and Galaxy Angel #6. I will not be present, but Kris has a tape with those episodes.

Report on March 30 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:35 pm by mark

As scheduled, Hellsing #5, RahXephon #4, Hikaru no Go #1, Haibane Renmei #4, and Galaxy Angel #4 were shown. The library’s large video monitor appears to have picked up some magnetic field damage somewhere along the way.

The episodes got a slightly late start due to shuffling around the room layout a bit, but I tried a new technique for showing the episodes one after another with no interruptions that worked well and kept everything running smoothly, so the meeting only ran over time by a few minutes. After the meeting, a few folks stayed for a five-minute overview of the game of Go.

Next meeting will be Sunday, April 13, from 1:30-3:30 PM. Scheduled episodes will be Hellsing #6, RahXephon #5, Hikaru no Go #2, Haibane Renmei #5, and Galaxy Angel #5.

Something of interest…

Posted in Fun Stuff at 12:56 am by Kris

Hi everyone,
I know this isn’t exactly anime-related, but I thought some of you might be interested. There’s currently an exhibit of Japanese woodblock prints and bronze sculptures at the Longmont Museum entitled “Of Samurai and Chrysanthemums”, running through May 11. Admission to the museum and exhibit is free. There will also be a free lecture associated with the exhibit on Wed., April 9, at 6:30pm. More info, including directions, hours, and further exhibit details is available at this link:
Longmont Museum Exhibit.

Happy looking!
Kris

Report on March 16 Meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 5:25 pm by mark

As scheduled, Hellsing #3 and Haibane Renmei #3 were shown. Additionally, for Viewer’s Choice, Hellsing #4, RahXephon #3, and Galaxy Angel #3 were shown.

After the regular meeting, a business meeting of club officers was held. A final roster of club officers was decided upon: Kris Stanich, President; Brian Simpson and Kelsey Waara, Vice Presidents; Owen Wears, Librarian; and Mark Bradford, Secretary. We further decided that it would be best to stick to a regular schedule of series, and only take a vote when it was time to decide on a new series, in order to reduce confusion during the meetings. Based on voting at this and previous meetings, plus a desire to balance out the genres of series being shown, we decided on Hellsing, RahXephon, Hikaru no Go, Haibane Renmei, and Galaxy Angel, to be shown in that order. The club librarian will assemble a list of available series, for future selections. Both Hellsing and Haibane Renmei are 13-episode series, so those will be the first two to be replaced.

Next meeting will be Sunday, March 30, 1:30-3:30 PM. Scheduled episodes will be Hellsing #5, RahXephon #4, Hikaru no Go #1, Haibane Renmei #4, and Galaxy Angel #4.

Report on March 2 Meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 4:52 pm by mark

As scheduled, Haibane Renmei #2 and Hellsing #2 were shown. For Viewer’s Choice, people wanted RahXephon #2, but my CD-ROM drive was acting cranky, so I started to show Oh! Super Milk-chan instead. This resulted in pain, confusion, and dismay, so I restarted my system and showed RahXephon #2 after all. In the remaining 15 minutes, we watched Galaxy Angel #2.

Next meeting will be March 16. Scheduled shows will be Haibane Renmei #3 and Hellsing #3. Viewer’s Choice candidates will be RahXephon #3, Wolf’s Rain #1, BoogiePop Phantom #2, and Galaxy Angel #3, plus anything anybody else brings.
