Report on February 29 and March 14 meetings

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:38 pm by mark

First, I apologize for the lateness of some meeting reports recently; I’ve been very busy, and it takes some time to do these reports if I opt to include episode summaries. I think I’ll abandon the summaries for now and just try to get reports up promptly.

February 29’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #13, RahXephon #25, Hikaru no Go #22, Scrapped Princess #11, and Galaxy Angel #25.

March 14’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #14, RahXephon #26, Hikaru no Go #23, Scrapped Princess #12, and Galaxy Angel #26. This concluded the run of RahXephon and the first season of Galaxy Angel. We also finalized the vote on the series to replace RahXephon; it will be Full Metal Alchemist.

For March 28, as a special treat, we will watch Miyazaki’s first film, Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind), which is not yet available in the US. (Scheduled release is August 31 — I’ll be buying it!)

Regular series will resume April 11, unless it is decided to do something different for Easter.

Next meeting Feb. 29

Posted in Meeting Announcements at 10:31 am by mark

The next meeting, at 1:15 PM on Sunday the 29th, and all subsequent meetings, will be half an hour longer, to allow more time for setup, breakdown, episodes, and hanging out. So we’ll see you from 1:15 to 3:45!

Report on February 15 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:47 am by mark

February 15’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #12, RahXephon #24, Hikaru no Go #21, Scrapped Princess #10, and Galaxy Angel #24. All were shown as scheduled. Also, at the very end, I showed the first episode of the cute three-minute show Ocha-ken (Tea Dogs).

This was a good meeting, with six club members in attendance beside myself.

Two more episodes of RahXephon remain. There are also two more episodes of the first season of Galaxy Angel, but there are two more seasons already, and a fourth is planned.

Episode summaries follow.

Report on January 18 and February 1 meetings

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:36 am by mark

January 18’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #11, RahXephon #23, Hikaru no Go #20, Scrapped Princess #9, and Galaxy Angel #23, postponed from the 4th. All episodes were shown, though only Michelle and her friend Tressa showed up.

For February 1, which was Superbowl Sunday (as well as being my father’s 80th birthday), I brought my Miyazaki DVDs. By unanimous acclaim, we chose Castle in the Sky (Tenkuu no Shiro Rapyuta), and watched that.

Report on December 21 and January 4 meetings

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:49 pm by mark

December 21’s’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #10, RahXephon #22, Hikaru no Go #19, Scrapped Princess #8, and Galaxy Angel #22. All were shown as scheduled. We had half a dozen members show up, plus a visit from members of Eternal Anime, a club based in Boulder.

January 4’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #11, RahXephon #23, Hikaru no Go #20, Scrapped Princess #9, and Galaxy Angel #23. However, besides myself, only Michelle showed up, so rather than watch the scheduled episodes, we checked out the first episodes of some series that I hadn’t yet seen. Specifically, we watched episode 1 of Texhnolyze, Wolf’s Rain, Tenshi na Konamaiki, and Happy World. I’ll put descriptions in the entry continuation. The long and the short of it is that Tenshi na Konamaiki might be a suitable replacement for RahXephon, which concludes after four more episodes.

Next meeting will be Sunday, January 18, from 1:15 PM to 3:15 PM.

Report on November 23 and December 7 meetings

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:41 pm by mark

November 23’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #8, RahXephon #20, Hikaru no Go #17, Scrapped Princess #6, and Galaxy Angel #20. Similarly, December 7’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #9, RahXephon #21, Hikaru no Go #18, Scrapped Princess #7, and Galaxy Angel #21. All episodes were shown as scheduled. Also, on Nov 23, I gave a whirlwind 10-minute introduction to Japanese, based on an example presentation I had previously prepared.

I’m afraid I’m too busy this time to provide episode summaries; that’s why this report is so late. Perhaps at some point I’ll be able to backfill, but no promises…

In a few meetings we’ll complete RahXephon and season one of Galaxy Angel. There are two more seasons of Galaxy Angel, but they’re packaged as pairs of 15-minute episodes rather than single 15-minute episodes, so at that time we’ll extend the meetings by half an hour (so that we’ll have a little extra breakdown time, or maybe even time for quickie language lessons) and choose a replacement for RahXephon.

Next meeting will be Sunday, December 21, from 1:15 PM to 3:15 PM.

Report on November 9 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 10:26 pm by mark

Today’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #7, RahXephon #19, Hikaru no Go #16, Scrapped Princess #5, and Galaxy Angel #19. This time I had everything loaded up properly beforehand, so the episodes were shown with no trouble. We had 8 members in attendance today, mostly the same folks as last time.

Like last time, I’ll put summaries of today’s episodes in the “extended entry” below.

Next meeting will be Sunday, November 23, from 1:15 PM to 3:15 PM.

Report on October 26 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:11 pm by mark

Today’s scheduled episodes were Naruto #6, RahXephon #18, Hikaru no Go #15, Scrapped Princess #5, and the weirder-than-usual Galaxy Angel #18. However, due to an error on my part, I didn’t have the Scrapped Princess episode with me, so we watched the first episode of the classic OVA All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku-Nuku instead.

As an experiment, I’ll put summaries of today’s episodes in the “extended entry” below.

It was a good meeting, with 9 attendees, including a couple of faces I hadn’t seen for a while, and a new member as well.

Next meeting will be Sunday, November 9, from 1:15 PM to 3:15 PM.

Meeting report for October 12, 2003

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:16 pm by Kris

Hi! The October 12 meeting was the first of our Sunday meetings, which will continue through the spring and early summer, so everyone gets to sleep in a little before joining us for the wonders of anime at a slightly later time slot. Mark was unable to stay, so he dropped off a tape for us. In the meantime some of our members got to put their illustrative talents to work and created some terrific sketches on the marker boards. Episodes watched were Naruto #5, RahXephon #17, Hikaru no Go #14, Scrapped Princess #4, and Galaxy Angel #17.
We also discussed the possibility of creating a web ring for the club to link up the club site, individual members’ sites, and we have also recieved a very kind offer of web space on one of our members’ sites (thanks, Chris!) in order to create a virtual gallery featuring our members’ art and room for reviews and articles by all of us. We’d love to see all of your contributions to this little online community, so let me know what you think and stay tuned for more details!!!
Thanks to everyone who attended and hope to see you all next time! The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1:15 to 3:15 pm, and episodes will be Naruto #6, RahXephon # 18, Hikaru no Go # 15, Scrapped Princess #5, and Galaxy Angel #18. Arigato and see you soon!
Kris

Report on September 27 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 12:45 am by mark

Unfortunately, I had a prior obligation at the time of this meeting, so I had to drop off a tape and leave.

Episodes on the tape were Naruto #4, RahXephon #16, Hikaru no Go #13, Scrapped Princess #3, and Galaxy Angel #16.

The next two meetings are confirmed for Sunday, October 12, and Sunday, October 26, from 1:15 PM to 3:15 PM. I will again miss the meeting on the 12th, but with luck should be able to make it on the 26th.

At Nan Desu Kan I presented a new one-hour overview of Japanese; if you would be interested in having me present it during, or after, a meeting, please let Kris or myself know!

Report on September 6 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 1:36 pm by mark

Another quiet meeting — besides myself, there were three people, only one of whom was there for the whole meeting (Hi, Casey!). Probably related to school starting again.

Episodes shown today were Naruto #3, RahXephon #15, Hikaru no Go #12, Scrapped Princess #2, and Galaxy Angel #15.

The next meeting is delayed to September 27, due to Nan Desu Kan. Meetings will continue on a bi-weekly basis after that (i.e., October 11 and 25, and so on).

Report on August 23 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:05 am by mark

Today was the club’s first anniversary meeting! Kris brought a cake, which was more than enough for the 8 people present. I’m happy to see attendance picking up!

Episodes shown today were Naruto #2, RahXephon #14, Hikaru no Go #11, Scrapped Princess #1, and the uncharacteristically serious Galaxy Angel #14.

Next meeting will be Saturday, September 6, 11:15 to 1:15. The meeting after that will be delayed to September 27, due to Nan Desu Kan.

Report on August 9 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:09 pm by mark

Good meeting today — 8 people showed up! Several folks brought snacks, though for some reason my chocolate-covered raisins weren’t too popular…

The first item was that I announced the results of the new series poll. Although I received only three ballots, there was no ambiguity; Naruto and Scrapped Princess tied for first place. Since there are more episodes of Naruto, I opted to start that series today, and we’ll start Scrapped Princess next meeting (replacing Haibane Renmei).

Episodes shown today were Naruto #1, RahXephon #13, Hikaru no Go #10, Haibane Renmei #13, and Galaxy Angel #13.

Next meeting will be Saturday, August 23.

Report on July 28 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 9:44 am by mark

There was a parade downtown, making it hard to get to the library, but despite starting a few minutes late, we finished on time. We actually had five members present this time, plus a couple of guests who stayed for the first episode and then departed.

We watched Hellsing #13, RahXephon #12, Hikaru no Go #9, Haibane Renmei #12, and Galaxy Angel #12. This was the final episode of Hellsing, and it was pretty wild, even for that show. Next meeting will have the final episode of Haibane Renmei. Kris’s intention is to vote for replacement series via the mailing list, so check your e-mail for more information.

Next meeting will be Saturday, August 9. There’s a chance I’ll be out of town; if so, I’ll get Kris a tape beforehand. But unless we’ve picked a replacement series before then, there’ll be a half-hour gap, so think about things you’d want to bring to show!

Report on July 12 meeting, announcement of July 26 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 8:03 pm by mark

Apologies for the late report, but since it’s basically a repeat of the previous report with the episode numbers incremented by one, it was hard to get excited about it.

We watched Hellsing #12, RahXephon #11, Hikaru no Go #8, Haibane Renmei #11, and Galaxy Angel #11.

Tomorrow (Saturday July 26) is the next meeting, 11:15 AM to 1:15 PM. We’ll be watching the next episode of each of the above series, but note that #13 is the last episode of Hellsing, and #12 is the next-to-last episode of Haibane Renmei. So it’ll be time for a change!

I’m still up for teaching Japanese, as well, if there’s interest.

Report on June 28 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:25 pm by mark

Attendance was light again this time — the same four die-hards as last time. But I again had the digital projector, which worked well in the small conference room. Kris brought cupcakes again!

(I would be interested in hearing any suggestions people would have for improving attendance — or are folks just busy during the summer?)

As scheduled, Hellsing #11, RahXephon #10, Hikaru no Go #7, Haibane Renmei #10, and the particularly funny Galaxy Angel #10 were shown.

Trivia: there is one voice actor who appears in two of the series we’re currently showing, and another who appears in three of them. Any guesses?

Report on June 14 meeting

Posted in Meeting Reports at 6:47 pm by mark

Attendance was light today; other than Kris and myself, only two members were present. But they got a special treat, as I was able to provide a digital projector and subwoofer-equipped speakers for my laptop, so the sound and video were better than ever. (In particular, the subtitles were a lot more readable, at higher resolution and larger size!)

As scheduled, Hellsing #10, RahXephon #9, Hikaru no Go #6, Haibane Renmei #9, and Galaxy Angel #9 were shown.

Afterward I showed the opening credit sequences for, and gave brief descriptions of, D.N.Angel, Naruto, Scrapped Princess, Ghost in the Shell, Narue no Sekai, E’s Otherwise, Last Exile, Kino no Tabi, Kaleido Star, Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai, Uchuu no Stellvia, and Full Moon wo Sagashite. In my personal opinion, the best of this crop are Scrapped Princess and Last Exile (and I’m also enjoying Kaleido Star and Uchuu no Stellvia), but once Hellsing and Haibane Renmei are over (in a few meetings), we’ll put it to a vote (perhaps after a reshowing of these intros, and any others that members opt to provide).

meeting report for Sat. May 31, 2003

Posted in Meeting Reports at 11:07 pm by Kris

May 31 was the first of our Saturday meetings, which will continue until Labor Day because the Library is closed on sundays over the summer. Attendance was very light, but we had a good time anyway. Mark was unable to attend because of a prior commitment, but he kindly dropped off a tape of the scheduled episodes. We watched Hellsing #9, RahXephon #8, Hikaru no Go #5, Haibane Renmei #8, and Galaxy Angel #8. We were in the small Conference Room just inside from the library entrance this time around, and it worked out well; no windows to peek through, good light control, and comfy chairs for a change! I just may request this room again.
Next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, from 11:15am to 1:15 pm; Scheduled episodes are Hellsing #10, RahXephon #9, Hikaru no Go #6, Haibane Renmei #9, and Galaxy Angel #9. We also may have previews of series we may want to see in future; come, bring or tell us about a favorite series if you’ve got one, and help us decide! See you there!

Posted in Meeting Announcements at 12:18 am by mark

The library was indeed closed over Memorial Day weekend, and will be closed on Sundays through the summer. Therefore, the next meeting will be Saturday, May 31, from 11:15 AM to 1:15 PM.

Scheduled episodes are: Hellsing #9, RahXephon #8, Hikaru no Go #5, Haibane Renmei #8, and Galaxy Angel #8.

I have a prior commitment and will not attend, but I have made a tape of the episodes which I will deliver at the beginning of the meeting.

The following meeting will be on Saturday, June 14, also from 11:15 to 1:15.
