Today’s meeting had its good points and bad points, but on the whole went very well indeed. Mark, unfortunately, was unable to attend the meeting, so he left us a tape of today’s episodes. This time the VCR worked without a hitch, but our TV looked like someone had zapped it with a shrink ray. The subtitles were often difficult to read, but thankfully everyone decided to stick it out. We also had the largest turnout we’ve ever had at any meeting, close to 20 people! Future meetings will be held in the larger meeting rooms next door if at all possible to accomodate our growing membership. Thanks to all our new attendees and thanks to all of you who’ve encouraged (or dragged) friends to our meetings!
Episodes today included our usual shows: Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, Hikaru no Go, Scrapped Princess, and Galaxy Angel, as well as our “bonus” shows Panda-Z and Sweet Valerian. Afterward, manga was traded, the marker board was lavishly illustrated, and possible new shows discussed…stay tuned to the forum and the club website for further updates! Thanks!

Hi there! Looks like our manga borrowing group is off to a roaring start! To that end, I’m going to post the rules that were proposed over the mailing list last week, just so everyone is clear on the rights and responsibilities here.
1. Members may borrow up to 2(or possibly 3) volumes
at any given time, and must return at least one to its
owner before borrowing another from any member.
2. Volumes must be returned within 2 meetings of when
they were originally borrowed, unless the owner of the
volume allows an extension at their discretion.
3. If the volume is not returned by the specified due
date, the borrowing privilages of the member who
borrowed the book will be suspended until the book is
returned, whereupon privilages will be restored.
4. If the volume in question is not returned by the
second meeting AFTER the one during which the book was
originally due, the member’s viewing privilages with
the club will be suspended until the book is returned.
5. The club will keep a list on file of what books
have been borrowed, from whom, and to whom the book(s)
have been lent. It is the responsibility of the book’s
owner, however, to let a club officer know if these
policies have been violated and that action needs to
be taken.
6. Borrowing is done entirely at the discretion of the
book’s owner, i.e. the book’s owner may decide to
bring a book in to show the other members but is in no
way obligated to lend it out. This applies especially
in the case of rarer materials or artbooks…
7. Apart from the enforcement of these policies, the
club is not responsible for any of the material lent
out, and is not responsible for the content of any of
the volumes. The club also asks that consideration be
made by the book’s owner in regard to its content,
i.e. age-appropriate materials, etc.
There, now it’s official! Several people brought lists of what they’ve got available to the last meeting, which is a great idea. Let me know if you want to post said lists here…

I’ve been going to cons for over 20 years, and working them nearly as long. I started as a grunt, running 16mm projectors, VCRs, and slide projectors, and showing miserable movies to empty rooms, then moved on to helping with sound and lights and video in main events rooms, then finally being in charge. This past spring I changed directions at StarFest, moving to help look after the guest stars, which was a refreshing change. This past weekend, I added a new role as MC of Nan Desu Kan.

This was the club’s second anniversary meeting, and we had a pretty decent turnout. Kris brought cake, and other folks brought fried rice and egg rolls, and other tasty goodies. I brought a selection of manga and other texts in Japanese, along with some dictionaries and other language reference material.
As a special treat, rather than the regularly-scheduled episodes, we watched a subtitled version of Miyazaki’s Tonari no Totoro, a true classic. I’d hoped for enough time to show Kiki’s Delivery Service as well, but we got started too late. Then Rob wanted to see something “short and strange” so I obliged him with a couple of odd Flash movies, plus a couple of episodes of Panda-Z, one of Dogtato-kun, and one of Ocha-ken. We wrapped up with an encore performance of episode 25 from the first season of Galaxy Angel, then just hung out chatting for a while.
As they say, a good time was had by all.

At the July 31 meeting, Naruto #19, Full Metal Alchemist #5, Hikaru no Go #29, Scrapped Princess #17, and Galaxy Angel II #7-8 were shown as scheduled. I also snuck in the first episodes of Panda-Z and Dogtato, two more short (5-minute) series I’ve come across. We had a few new members at this meeting, which was nice.
The August 14 meeting was held earlier than usual, at 11:00. For a change I thought to take notes, so I can include some episode summaries. We watched Naruto #20, Full Metal Alchemist #6, Hikaru no Go #30, Scrapped Princess #18, and Galaxy Angel II #9-10, plus the second and third episodes of Panda-Z.

Hi Everyone! Just a few things in this installment of the Club newsletter…
1. Our next meeting is this Saturday, August 14 at the Library as usual, but at a slightly earlier time, from 11am -1:30pm instead of the usual time. Hope you all can make it!!!
2. Since I know a number of you have been interested in going to Nan Desu Kan, the annual anime convention in Denver, taking place Sept. 17-19, I wanted to let you know that discount advance tickets are still available until August 22. That’s $40 for the full weekend (after the 22nd, prices go up to $45 for the full weekend at the door) For those attending only 1 day, prices are $15 for Friday only, and $25 for Saturday/Sunday (again, only at the door, no 1-day tickets are available for pre-registration) The earlier in the year you register, or even register at this year’s con for next year, the cheaper tickets are, so that’s something to keep in mind. I’m still checking as to whether discount tickets are available to groups like the Club, let you know when I find out more.
YAY! At the meeting after next, on August 28, the LAC will be celebrating its second anniversary!!! We’d like to have a little party to celebrate the occasion, so bring some soda or snacks to share, and don’t forget to put on your wildest and wackiest anime-inspired wear (furry ears welcome!), t-shirt from your favorite show, etc. for the club photo!
As part of the celebration for the Club’s anniversary, it would be fun, in addition to a party at the meeting, to possibly go out for an informal dinner or lunch as a group. Obviously this would be voluntary and everyone would be responsible for their own transportation, meal, etc., but it would be great to just go and have a good time at one of Longmont’s Japanese restaurants (or someplace else, if the group prefers) Does this idea appeal to everyone? If so, what day and time would be best? Also, which restaurant? Ichiban has excellent food (including vegetarian options), fairly reasonable prices, and a casual atmosphere. I’ve never been to Sakura; is anyone else familiar with them and could give us some more info? or does everyone prefer someplace else? Let us know either via e-mail or the comments here on the club website. I’ll also mention this at the meetings so we can discuss further!

Alas, technical difficulties with the library’s TV/VCR forced us to cancel this meeting, since the VCR devoured the tape Mark brought for us. After a valiant battle between our more technically savvy members and the ravenous mechanical beast, we freed the tape, but since both the VCRs the library has are now broken, we couldn’t watch any of our shows.
Thanks anyway to our members who did make it, Jared, Jimmy, and Robert, and as always to Mark for providing the tape!
Barring complete disaster, our next meeting should go forward as usual on Saturday, July 31 from 1:15 to 3:45 pm, at the library. We’ll be watching the episodes we would have seen at the July 17 meeting:

Attendance was pretty light, and in fact besides myself only one new member, Jared (though a different Jared from the May 14 Jared), watched all the episodes.

Hi everyone,
Hope all of you are getting ready for a fantastic July 4th weekend! Just a reminder, no meeting this week, it’ll be two weeks from this Saturday. No serious club business to report this time around, but at the next meeting, we will be discussing the club policy toward fansubs; depending on the feedback we receive, it may affect how we select shows in the future, so come and voice your opinions!!!
This Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day, so check out what’s going on at your local comic book store(s) and maybe bring a couple of friends along to introduce them to the wonders of comics!
News:
Just a couple of things:
The first Inuyasha movie will be airing on Cartoon Network on Saturday, October 23. Also, on November 6, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex will begin airing on Adult Swim.
MTV2 is apparently having an anime festival of some kind this Saturday, for those who have that channel. Ah My Goddess fans will be happy to learn that a new series is in the works, which is set after the OAV series and will continue the storyline as laid out in the manga version. It should be released later this year.

Hello again,
Here we go again with the second installment of the club newsletter! First off, our next meeting will take place on July 17, not on July 3, since the Library will be closed for the July 4 weekend. So go out and enjoy the fireworks (and avoid the mosquitoes while you’re at it), and we’ll see you on the 17th from 1:15 to 3:45!
Well, not too much new stuff to report from the world of anime this week. Some unfortunate news came down the wire regarding Disney’s release of several Hiyao Miyizaki films, including Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (we saw the fansubbed version of this terrific film a couple of months ago), Porco Rosso, and My Neighbor Totoro. Apparently Disney has indefinitely delayed the release of these titles, initially scheduled to be released on August 31. Keep your fingers crossed and hope these films do eventually make it to this side of the ocean…

Howdy everyone! This is the first installment of what should become a weekly newsletter to discuss club business, first and foremost, and secondly, what’s happening in the world of anime and manga; what’s out there, what’s coming to the US, what’s available in fansubs and scans, neat cultural stuff, and more!
First, I have an important issue to discuss with all of you, and your input is very important since it may well affect the way this club functions in the future. It concerns the newest addition to our lineup, Fullmetal Alchemist. We’re currently on episode #3, I believe, and I think there are 52 episodes total, so, like with Naruto and Hikaru no Go, we’ll be watching this one for a while.
What sets it apart from the other two shows mentioned, however, is the fact that it’s just been licensed. The version we’re watching right now, as with all of our shows, is a fansub, meaning that it’s being subtitled by fans for other fans for free distribution. The grounds for fansubbing get a little fuzzy when a show is actually licensed by a company for release domestically. Some fansub groups stop distribution immediately when the license is announced; others wait until the show is actually available on DVD or is being shown on TV, while still others continue to release fansubs even AFTER the show is on DVD or TV (something of a no-no)
In the case of Fullmetal Alchemist, it’s been licensed by Funimation, and supposedly it’s coming to Cartoon Network starting October 23. In terms of fansubbed episodes, we have everything that’s been subbed so far that’s out there. For future episodes, one of the groups we got the subs from has decided to stop distribution and move on to other projects; another group, however, has decided to continue with future episodes as they are released, which means that we can continue watching the show at least until October. Hopefully all episodes will be out in fansub by then and we can have the full run of the series. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; sometimes if a licensed show doesn’t do that well, the later episodes are never released domestically, (as in the case of the series Twelve Kingdoms), which means hard-to-get fansubs or bootleg copies are the only way to complete it. I doubt this’ll happen with Fullmetal Alchemist, but I want you all to know what’s going on just for the record.
The club has watched fansubs of shows that were licensed and released domestically during the time we had them scheduled as part of the lineup in the past (Berserk, Hellsing, Rahxephon, and Galaxy Angel, among others), but this is the first time we’ve had a show get licensed this early in terms of our showing it. What I need to know is this: is this a problem for you all or not? Please post your opinions, comments, concerns, etc. to the mailing list, the forum, or as comments here on the club website!!! It’s very important that I know what your stance on this is!!!

Recent Anime releases:
Several of the titles acquired by Cartoon Network and that are currently airing there will recieve an uncut DVD release in the next couple months, including Wolf’s Rain and the newest addition to Adult Swim, Case Closed(a.k.a. Detective Conan), so if you want to catch them in their entirety as they were meant to be seen , you’ll have your opportunity…
Also, the Read or Die tv series is finally coming out, Vol. 1 will be available June 29. We got to see the Read or Die OAV a while back and it rocked, hopefully the series will be just as enjoyable…
Manga: Lots of new titles in the past couple of months, including several that have been a very long time in coming to American shores. The manga versions of several series we’ve watched are now available, including Hellsing and Galaxy Angel. Dark Horse has apparently had some success with their release of the Berserk manga and has decided to continue: Vol. 1-3 are currently out, and Vol. 4 will be out July 15 (mature readers on this one, please; as I’ve said before, the Club won’t be paying for anyone’s therapy ;) Chrono Crusade is now available and highly recomended, as is the manga version of Saiyuki, which I actually prefer to the anime…
For shoujo manga fans, Vol. 1 of the long-awaited manga version of Tokyo Babylon is finally out in a very nice edition from TokyoPop. We have several fans of X the Movie and the X TV series out there, not to mention the X manga; this is essentially the prequel and a must-read for any fan of Clamp’s work.
Fansubs and scanlations: Lots of good stuff here, direct from Japan: check out www.Animesuki.com for a good list of available fansubs of all kinds of shows.
For manga scanlations: The US version of Shonen Jump has a “Manga Explorer” section in each issue, discussing popular manga titles not yet available in the US. Many of these titles can be found at www.toriyamaworld.com, where you can read the manga for Fullmetal Alchemist (that’s how I found the series to begin with), download Naruto fansubs if you like, see lots of Akira Toriyama’s early work before Dragonball and Dragonball Z, and check out one of my newest favorites, Bremen, a weird, wild title about a rock band.
Peacemaker Kurogane was one of the runners-up when we decided on our latest series to watch; if you want the manga version, it’s called Peace Maker Shinsengumi Imon and it’s available for download at www.mangacity.net. Awesome for any fan of samurai-type anime or manga like Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai Deeper Kyo.

At the May 9 meeting, as scheduled, we watched Naruto #17, Full Metal Alchemist #3, Hikaru no Go #27, Scrapped Princess #15, and Galaxy Angel II #3-4. Also, in honor of Tressa, we watched Ocha-Ken episodes 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. However, since she has now moved away, we’ll remove Ocha-Ken from the schedule.
We actually had three new faces this time, including Mike, Andrew, and David, who happened to be wandering by and came in to watch.
The library has now moved to its summer schedule, and is closed on Sundays, so the next meeting will be Saturday, June 5, from 1:15-3:45 PM.

At the May 9 meeting, as scheduled, we watched Naruto #16, Full Metal Alchemist #2, the double-length Hikaru no Go #25 and #26, Scrapped Princess #14, and Ocha-ken #5.
In addition to myself, we had 6 members in attendance, including two brand-new members. Welcome to Christina and Jared! Unfortunately, next meeting will be Tressa’s last, since she’s moving away. We’ll watch a couple of extra episodes of Ocha-ken in her honor.

At the April 25 meeting, as scheduled, we watched Naruto #15, Full Metal Alchemist #1, Hikaru no Go #24, Scrapped Princess #13, and Galaxy Angel II #1-2. (The second season of Galaxy Angel still consists of 15-minute episodes, but they are grouped together in pairs.) Also, by request, we watched Ocha-ken #4; since that show is only 5 minutes long, we may as well add it to the schedule.
The next meeting is Sunday, May 9 (Mother’s Day), at 1:15 PM. The next episode of Hikaru no Go is a double-length show, episodes 25 and 26, so we’ll skip Galaxy Angel (which doesn’t have much of a plot).

As advertised, we watched Miyazaki’s Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) on March 28. We had pretty good attendance, including a couple of new faces, and everybody seemed to enjoy the movie.
As Kris announced via the e-mail list, the library is closed on April 11 for Easter, so there will be no meeting.
The next meeting will be Sunday, April 25, from 1:15 to 3:45, at which we will watch Naruto #15, Full Metal Alchemist #1, Hikaru no Go #24, Scrapped Princess #13, and Galaxy Angel II #1.
